Summer Skincare Tips: Sun Protection

The days are longer, the sun is warmer, and it's time to kick back and enjoy all that summer has to offer. Nothing feels better than spending time enjoying the sun, but it's important to keep your skin protected from UV rays. These five tips can help keep your skin healthy while you're enjoying the long, lazy days of summer.

1. Don't even think about skipping sunscreen.

You've heard it a million times, and we're going to make it a million and one—you need to apply sunscreen every day to help keep your skin protected and healthy.

Follow these tips to ensure that you're getting the most out of your sunscreen routine:

  • Apply sunscreen to all exposed skin at least 15 minutes before going outdoors.
  • When possible, wear sun-protective clothing when spending time outdoors (even if it's cloudy). Try to include long-sleeved top layers, pants, and a wide-brimmed hat.
  • Sunglasses don't just look great in the summer—they can also help protect your eyes and the delicate skin surrounding them.
  • Select a broad-spectrum sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 30. You'll also want to use a lip balm that offers an SPF of at least 30.
  • Reapply sunscreen about every two hours, or more frequently if you're sweating or spending time in water.

2. Stay hydrated, whether you're spending time indoors or outdoors.

Drinking plenty of water can help boost your skin's defenses against sun damage by decreasing the amount of time it takes for skin wounds to heal. While staying hydrated won't stop you from getting a sunburn, it will set you up to heal quickly if you spend a little too much time soaking up the rays.

3. Load up on antioxidant-rich foods.

Enjoying foods rich in antioxidants can help protect your skin from sun damage. Try adding more berries, artichokes, apples, bananas, almonds, walnuts, broccoli, tomatoes, and bell peppers to your nutrition plan for an antioxidant boost.

4. Tackle summer skin issues right away.

Sunburn, heat rash, and sun-related eczema are all common summer skin issues. Taking care of any skin problems right away can help reduce any long-term damage. If you're sunburned or otherwise experiencing a negative skin reaction to the sun, spend time indoors when possible. Apply a cool compress to the affected area. In severe cases, reach out to your dermatologist for treatment.

5. Be sure to prioritize post-sun skin care.

After spending time in the sun, it's important to give your skin some extra TLC. Taking a cool shower can help to rinse away sand, dirt, and sweat after a day in the sun. Remember to drink plenty of water. If you experience any peeling, apply aloe vera gel to the area.
